Stephen C. Datz
A Colorado native, Stephen was raised in the rural outskirts of Loveland. Though much of his early education was in math and science, drawing has been second nature to Stephen his whole life. He began illustrating freelance in high school, and was also the staff artist and cartoonist for his award winning high school newspaper. His talent led him to earn a BFA in Design from Colorado State University in 1992, and shortly thereafter he set aside his nascent career as a graphic designer and resolved to pursue his dream of becoming a fine artist.
A dedicated plein-air landscape painter, Stephen works on location year-round, translating his passion for the varied terrain, fleeting moods, and abstract rhythms of the western landscape into a singularly personal visual poetry. A veteran traveler and backpacker, Stephen has painted his way across the west, and enjoys seeking inspiration wherever he may be.
A veteran of over a dozen solo shows and numerous national group exhibitions, Stephen’s award-winning work has been the subject of feature articles in many regional and national art publications, including Southwest Art and Fine Art Connoisseur. He currently resides in Grand Junction, Colorado.
