Don Sahli hits the slopes
Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery Telluride presents
December 24th, 2013 – January 3rd, 2014
Telluride, Colo. — Is Don Sahli, a nationally-renowned American painter, “a painter who skis or a skier who paints?” Holiday visitors have the opportunity to find the answer when Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery Telluride hosts Don Sahli as their Artist-in-Residence, December 24th, 2013 through January 3rd, 2014.
Sahli will paint plein air on the streets, and the coves and corners of Telluride, capturing the holiday charm of this iconic western town. He will also take his “studio” on the mountain. With the help of an “art Sherpa”, Sahli will try his hand and brush along with skis and poles on the Telluride ski mountain, setting up his easel to paint spectacular mountain vistas and alpine landscapes. On other days, look for him at his easel along the nearby frozen streams and villages.
At the end of the day, Sahli will bring these outdoor “field works”, to Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery for daily viewing from 3 to 7 pm. Art enthusiasts can continue their journey with Sahli as he takes his passion and talent to a larger canvas hung on the gallery wall, creating new paintings from the plein air work, or maybe a colorful still life or gallery interior. As a special event, he will hold a professional painting demonstration in the gallery on January 2nd, from 1pm to 4pm; followed by ArtWalk that evening, 5pm-8pm, featuring a collection of his works painted prior to his Artist-in-Residence stay.
Sahli is a prolific painter who enjoys the sunshine and crisp blue shadows of winter as well as the falling snow, letting the flakes mix into his palette. “Oil and water do not mix; it is a wonderful time – painting and capturing the atmosphere of snowfall and winter.”
Though very American, Sahli’s work contains echoes of the Russian Impressionist masters; he is the last apprentice to the famous Russian colorist, Sergei Bongart. His subjects celebrate the colorful and spectacular West, while his use of color, light and spontaneity reveal his training in the Russian School of Painting. Don Sahli’s paintings are available at our galleries in Telluride and Crested Butte on an ongoing basis.
