This exhibition explores process experimentation, and the freedom of creative expression. In this latest series, Marissa Vogl embraces a fluid, intuitive approach, allowing each piece to unfold without constraint. The work serves as a “tip of the hat” to the spirit of creating and what happens when an artist follows curiosity, perhaps even shifting techniques and discovering something new in the moment. The result is a collection that feels both personal and expansive, rooted in the idea that creating is, first and foremost, for the maker.
“This body of work is really about freedom,” says Vogl. “A reminder that we can create whatever we want, however we want, in that moment. When we allow ourselves to work that way, there’s a kind of honesty that comes through, something more human, more connected.”
Alongside her exploration of the process, Vogl’s work carries an undercurrent of optimism and urgency, drawing attention to the natural world, particularly Mother Earth and her waters, and prompting reflection on our relationship to it.
Most of my paintings are a metamorphosis that reflects a person's life journey. They begin pure and beautifully innocent with a clean wash of pigment. A few fluid marks set the stage for an evolution—a journey of curiosity, miles of paint, and layers upon layers of brushwork running into obstacles, failures, successes, and aha moments. These layers create the story, just as a child grows into their own character. At some point, the painting asks for a pause. As I recognize the cue, I take time to reflect and nourish what has been sculpted. Then, I remember to trust that the layers created are enough and that the raw beauty is everything. The painting is proudly all of itself.
